Judo is a dynamic martial art and Olympic sport that combines fitness, skill, discipline and respect.
Founded in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, the word Judo means “the gentle way”, reflecting its emphasis on using technique, balance and timing rather than relying on strength alone. At its heart, Judo is about learning how to use movement and leverage effectively, while developing respect for your training partners and the traditions and values of the sport.
Judo contests take place on a matted competition area called a tatami, with two Judoka competing against each other under the supervision of a referee. The aim is to score using controlled throwing or groundwork techniques. An Ippon is the highest score and immediately wins the contest — this can be achieved with a well-executed throw, holding an opponent down for the required time, or through a successful submission in appropriate age groups. A Waza-ari is awarded for a technique that falls just short of Ippon, and two Waza-ari scores equal an Ippon and win the contest.
Competitions are available at club, regional, national and international level, with competitors normally grouped by age and weight to create fair contests. For those who enjoy competition, Judo offers a pathway from friendly beginner events all the way through to major championships and the Olympic Games. Competition is completely optional, however, and many people enjoy Judo throughout their lives without ever competing.
Judo is suitable for children and adults of all ages and abilities, making it a sport that can be enjoyed throughout life. Regular training helps develop strength, balance, coordination, flexibility and overall fitness, while also providing benefits that extend well beyond physical exercise. Judo encourages confidence, resilience, self-discipline, concentration and respect for others, helping participants learn how to challenge themselves, deal with setbacks and recognise their own progress and achievements.
Whether you want to compete, improve your fitness, learn a new skill, meet new people or simply have fun, Judo offers something for everyone. Some Judoka enjoy the challenge of competition and working towards their next grade, while others train purely for enjoyment, fitness and the social side of being part of a club. Whatever your goals or starting point, Judo provides an enjoyable way to stay active, keep learning and be part of a welcoming community.
