Competition can be an exciting part of Judo, giving Judoka the opportunity to test the skills they’ve learned in training, challenge themselves and meet Judoka from other clubs.
Kanokwai has a proud competitive history and supports Judoka who want to challenge themselves at the appropriate level.
But there’s one important thing every new member should know: You don’t have to compete to enjoy Judo.
Some Kanokwai members love competing. Others enjoy training, learning new skills, improving their fitness and being part of the club without competing. Both are absolutely fine.
If you or your child would like to compete, speak to your coach. They’ll help identify suitable events based on factors such as age, grade, weight and experience.
Before entering your first event, your coach will explain how everything works and make sure you’re ready.
A typical competition day can involve registration or weigh-in, warming up, waiting for your category to be called and then competing in one or more contests.
It can all seem a little confusing the first time — don’t worry, we’ll help you through it.
Everyone likes winning a medal, but competition is also an important opportunity to learn.

At Kanokwai, effort, attitude and development matter just as much as the result.
For competition days you’ll normally need:
Requirements vary between events, so always check the event information and speak to your coach if you’re unsure.
For those who want to pursue competitive Judo further, there are opportunities to progress from club and local events through regional, national and international competition.
Kanokwai has experience of Judo at every level — but every competitive journey starts with a first contest.
