Gradings

YOUR JUDO JOURNEY

Judo isn’t only about winning contests. A huge part of the sport is learning, improving and gradually developing your skills.

The Judo grading system recognises that progress and gives every Judoka something to work towards throughout their Judo journey.

How Do Gradings Work?

As you learn new techniques and develop your understanding of Judo, your coaches will help you work towards your next grade.

Gradings aren’t simply about strength or whether you can beat someone else. They recognise your developing technical ability, knowledge and understanding of Judo.

Your coaches will help you prepare and let you know when you’re ready to take the next step.

Junior Grades

Young Judoka progress through the Mon grading system, developing their Judo step by step as their skills and experience grow.

Each new grade marks another stage in their development and gives young Judoka a clear sense of achievement and something new to work towards.

Senior Grades

Older Judoka progress through the Kyu grading system, with the opportunity over time to work towards black belt and the Dan grades beyond it.

Reaching black belt is a significant achievement — but it certainly isn’t the end of learning Judo.

Your Next Grade

Your coaches will let you know what you should be working on and when they believe you’re ready to grade.

Everyone develops at a different pace. The important thing isn’t how quickly you move through the grades — it’s to keep training, keep learning and enjoy your progress.
