Your First Session

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR FIRST JUDO SESSION

Trying something new can feel a little daunting, but there’s no need to know anything about Judo before you arrive. Beginners are always welcome at Kanokwai, and our coaches will guide you through everything you need to know.

Before You Arrive

We recommend arriving around 10 minutes before your first class. This gives you time to meet your coach, see the training area and get settled before the session begins.

There’s no need to be fit, flexible or have any previous martial arts experience. Your first session is about getting comfortable on the mat, learning the basics and, most importantly, enjoying yourself.

What to Wear

You don’t need to buy a Judogi (Judo suit) before trying Judo. For your first session, comfortable sports clothing such as tracksuit bottoms or leggings and a T-shirt is ideal.

Avoid clothing with hard buttons, zips or anything that could catch during training. Jewellery should be removed, long hair tied back and fingernails and toenails kept short.

Judo is practised barefoot on the mat, but please bring footwear such as sliders or flip-flops to wear whenever you leave the matted area.

What to Bring

You don’t need much — comfortable clothing, a bottle of water and a willingness to give Judo a try!

If there’s anything our coaches should know that would help make the class more comfortable or accessible for you or your child, please let us know when you arrive.

What Happens on the Mat?

Your coach will introduce you to the basic customs of Judo and show you how to move safely on the mat.

One of the first skills every Judoka learns is Ukemi — how to fall safely. From there, you’ll gradually be introduced to Judo through movement, games, partner exercises and basic techniques appropriate to your age and experience.

Nobody expects you to know what you’re doing on day one — that’s what we’re here to teach you.

Can I stay and watch?

Absolutely. Parents and carers are welcome to stay and watch during their child’s first sessions. We encourage this while you and your child get comfortable with the club and how our sessions work.

After Your Free Trial

If you’ve enjoyed your session and would like to continue, speak to your coach afterwards. We’ll explain the appropriate class, club membership, JudoScotland membership and everything else you need to get started.

Then your Judo journey really begins.
